About the Point Spread Calculator

This tool estimates a team’s chance of winning outright from its point spread. It uses a normal, or bell-curve, model of scoring margins. You can change how widely those margins are expected to vary.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose a league and enter the team’s spread. Use a negative number for the favorite.
  2. Set the scoring-margin standard deviation. This controls how much results can vary around the expected margin.
  3. Use your own model value, or try the labeled example value.
  4. Compare both teams’ win chances and fair moneyline odds. The table shows how changing the assumption affects the result.

Formula and definitions

  1. Expected scoring margin μ = −spread.
  2. Model win chance = Φ(μ ÷ σ).
  3. Fair decimal odds = 1 ÷ model win chance.
μ (mu)
The expected scoring margin. A -3 spread is treated as an expected 3-point win.
σ (sigma)
The standard deviation in points. A larger value means a wider range of scoring margins.
Φ (phi)
The standard normal cumulative distribution function. It converts the ratio μ ÷ σ into a win chance.

Odds for a team to win outright.

Worked example

  1. Enter a -3 spread and a standard deviation of 13.5 points.
  2. The expected margin is 3 points. Divide 3 by 13.5 to get about 0.2222.
  3. The normal model turns that value into a 58.79% win chance.
  4. Fair moneylines are about -143 for the selected team and +143 for its opponent.

How to read your result

The win chance comes from the model assumptions you entered. It is not a measured win rate.

The table compares different standard deviations. It is not a confidence interval or a range of guaranteed results.

Assumptions and limitations

  • The starting league values are examples. They are not fitted to a historical dataset and have no claimed sample size or time period.
  • The bell-curve model ignores common final margins, whole-number scores, ties, and overtime rules. Use it only where there are two possible outcomes.
  • The spread is treated as the expected margin. The model does not adjust for odds on the spread, totals, home advantage, or game details.

Common mistake to avoid

Selecting a league does not load historical results. Use a standard deviation tested against relevant data before relying on the estimate.
